Another issue of concern to gay men that is being pretty much ignored by the charities allegedly looking out for our interests: social isolation faced by gay men 55 years of age and older. Not only are we holding onto unresolved issues from the AIDS Crisis, but statistically we are less likely to have family members keeping an eye on us as adult children do with their aged parents. And, again statistically speaking, when our partners die or move on, we are less likely to find a new partner. To top it all off, being the only man over sixty in a bar full of gay men in their twenties and thirties is to be invisible.
This leads to social isolation and social isolation kills us. It’s like covering the warning lights in your car with tape. I’m speaking literally when I say it’s killing us: we are more likely to have problems managing drug and alcohol use and are more likely to attempt suicide than is typical of the wider population.
