The Gay Men's Network letter on the conversion therapy debate

GMN Director Hassan Mamdami inconveniently raises actual evidence in a debate too often lacking in fact.

Working with a team at GMN, my fellow director Hassan has written a fantastic letter ahead of Monday’s parliamentary debate on the conversion therapy bill. As he points out, those arguing that “trans conversion therapy” (a) exists or (b) can be adequately distinguished from talking therapies for kids who are in the main gay, autistic or disproportionately care leavers is sadly lacking.

As the letter says, we know already that extremists propose to use this legislation to harass respected medics. And, as the fantastic Clive has pointed out, the actual grim history of conversion therapy as inflicted against gay people is a far cry from responsible medics simply trying to grapple with the social contagion of biology denial.

Conversion by gender is the modern version of gay conversion therapy, a point brilliantly made in Hassan’s letter available here.
